Android enjoys 80 percent of global smartphone market share, BlackBerry posts 40 perc

The findings of the International Data Corporation’s new report suggests that Google’s Android now tops the OS chart with close to 80 percent market share, which is 10 percent up from last year, and 187.4 million unit shipments in the second quarter of the year 2013. The OS is believed to be growing at 73.5 percent year-on-year growth rate, which is the second highest growth rate recorded after Windows Phone at 77.6 percent. And while Android and Windows Phone continue to grow, Apple is reportedly facing a plunge in the year on year growth in the worldwide smartphone OS market. BlackBerry OS is the most hit in the market with -11.7 percent year-on-year growth rate and has lost almost 40 percent of its market share from Q2, 2012.
The latest report on the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker has recorded that vendors have shipped a total of 236.4 million smartphones in Q2, 2013, which is 51.3 percent more that the 156.2 million units shipped in Q2, 2012. The overall smartphone shipments for the month have grown by 9.3 percent than the shipments recorded in first quarter of the year.
According to the report, Apple’s iOS market share have dropped by over 3 percent to 13.2 percent share in the second quarter of 2013 as compared to the same time last year; the reason being no new model of iPhone launched within a year’s time. It is due to the lack of new products that the Cupertino-based company is also witnessing a year on year decline in growth in the tablet market as well. On the shrinking iOS market shares, Ramon Llamas, research manager in mobile phone team in IDC believes that once the new iPhone is launched the company will re-capture its lost share. “Without a new product launch since the debut of the iPhone 5 nearly a year ago, Apple’s market share was vulnerable to product launches from the competition. But with a new iPhone and revamped iOS coming out later this year, Apple is well-positioned to re-capture market share,” Llamas says.
On the overall OS market, iOS still holds second place and has shipped 31.2 million units in Q2, 2013.
On the other hand, Windows Phone is also enjoying a pick up in the market during the last one year with a 77.6 percent year-over-year change, and is believed to continue to grow even further. Windows Phone shipments had toppled BlackBerry’s shipment in last quarter, and it continues growing upwards. Ryan Reith, program manager with IDC’s Mobility Tracker Programs, says that “Nokia has clearly been the driving force behind the Windows Phone platform and we expect that to continue. However, as more and more vendors enter the smartphone market using the Android platform, we expect Windows Phone to become a more attractive differentiator in this very competitive market segment.”
Vendors-wise, Samsung leads the market and contributes to 73.3 percent of the units in the total Android market. However, despite a huge market share, Samsung too has witnessed a plunging year on year growth. Its smartphone market share has declined by 5 percent from 44 percent in Q2, 2012 to 39 percent in Q2, 2013.
The next in Android league is the LG, which enjoys the second place with 12.1 million shipments and 6.5 percent market share. It is then followed by Chinese vendors like Huawei, Lenovo, and ZTE, each of which recorded double-digit shipment volumes in the millions.
