While Apple’s plans to launch the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C next week are out in the open, the iPhone maker is reportedly toying with the idea of future iPhones with bigger displays. Apparently, Apple has been testing iPhones with display sizes ranging from 4.8-inches to as large as 6-inches, WSJ reports. Apple seems to be particularly interested in the 4.8-inch iPhone, the report further suggests citing sources in the component supplier chain.
This wouldn’t really come as news considering Apple has been testing iPhones with bigger displays internally but it has not executed any of those plans. The first five generations of the iPhone had a 3.5-inch display while the iPhone 5 introduced last year had a slightly bigger 4-inch display. The two iPhones Apple is expected to unveil next week is expected to have 4-inch displays as well.
So far Apple has maintained that it would not make a smartphone with a massive display, popularly known as phablets, that users can’t use with a single hand. However, phablets have taken off in the smartphone universe. IDC India’s latest report suggests that 30 percent of all smartphones shipped in India were phablets – devices with display sizes ranging from 5-inches to 6.99-inches. The research firm estimates phablets to account for an increasing chunk of smartphone shipments globally as well.
This isn’t the first time when Apple would make a u-turn on statements regarding its future product portfolio. After introducing the iPad in 2010, Steve Jobs had maintained that Apple would not make a smaller 7-inch tablet like other Android vendors, most notably Samsung, and believed that the 9.7-inch iPad was the perfect size for a tablet. Apple introduced the iPad mini last October that had a 7.9-inch display.
