Micromax likely to launch 30 smartphones this year

New Delhi: Domestic handset maker Micromax today said it will launch 30 smartphones this year to expand the portfolio of handsets and tablet PCs as it eyes leadership position in the segment.

"We have a strong portfolio of products in the smart devices category, which contributes about 40-45 per cent of our revenues. We are looking at bringing in 30 new smartphones this year across price categories and take up market leadership position," Micromax CEO Deepak Mehrotra told reporters.

According to CyberMedia Research, a total of 102.43 million units were shipped to India during January-June 2012, of which 5.50 million units were smartphones. Nokia was the overall leader with a 22.2 per cent share, while Samsung and Micromax followed with 13 per cent and 5.5 per cent market share.

Samsung led the smartphone race with a 41.6 per cent share, followed by Nokia (19.2 per cent) and Research in Motion (12.1 per cent).

Micromax today announced the launch of its Canvas HD smartphone in the "phablet" category.

"Canvas HD follows the Canvas and Canvas II, which were introduced last last year. It will be priced sub-Rs. 15,000 and will be available from February onwards," Mr Mehrotra said.

Canvas HD has a five-inch touchscreen smartphone, powered by 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and has Android Jellybean operating system. It has an 8MP camera and expandable memory up to 32GB.

"In the October-December quarter, we shipped 198,100 units in the five-inch device category, much higher than competition. In January, we are confident of 1.3 times higher growth in sales," he added.

Micromax sued by Ericsson for Rs. 100 crore over patent infringement

Indian handset maker Micromax has been sued by Ericsson on charges of patent infringement. The Swedish network equipment maker is seeking a whopping Rs. 100 crore in damages. The company also claims that it has been negotiating with Micromax for about three years now and has finally moved the Delhi High Court to seek legal remedy.

Patent Infringement cases have become a common in the western countries where large technology companies such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Google, Microsoft et al are battling multiple cases. However, this is the first time a patent infringement case of such high stakes has rocked the Indian telecom space.

As per Ericsson, the bone of contention is Micromax's refusal to enter into a licensing agreement covering its patented innovations across several wireless technology standards such as GSM, EDGE and 3G.

Commenting on this case, Micromax via a press statement said, "Micromax is committed to negotiating a FRAND license with Ericsson as has Ericsson undertaken to providing a Fair Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) license to Micromax. Since the matter is pending before the Hon'ble court it would be incorrect for Micromax to make any further statements on the matter".

Micromax is one of the most popular handset brands in India. The company has recently churned out Android-based smartphones like A110 Canvas 2 (Review | Pictures) and A116 Canvas HD (Review |Pictures). As per the company, both these smartphones have got an encouraging response from the Indian market. According to a news report in The Economic Times, the disputed smartphones includes Micromax Ninja smartphones and the popular Canvas 2 series. Micromax's Funbook Talk tablet too is reportedly under the scanner.

While Micromax and Ericsson are at loggerheads for the patent infringement case, several other Indian handset makers are feeling the heat. Ericsson is reportedly planning to take similar legal action against some of other Indian handset makers, though at this point it is hard to comment who will be next in the firing line.

Datawind tops India's tablet market in Q1 2013, followed by Micromax, Apple: Survey

The tablet market in India grew two-and-a-half times on an annual basis, with sales of over nine lakh units clocking a daily average of 10,000 devices during the January-March period of 2013, as per a study by CyberMedia Research.

Both international and home grown companies jointly sold around 3.49 lakh units in the same period a year ago.

Sequentially, however, there was a decline of 17.57 percent from around 11 lakh units sold in October-December 2012 period, the study said.

"Although the first quarter of CY (calendar year) 2013 Tablet shipment numbers are marginally lower compared to fourth quarter CY 2012, but this is not a substantial gap and may be attributed to seasonality,"

CMR Telecoms Practice Lead Analyst Faisal Kawoosa said in a statement.

He added that "the country continued to witness tablet shipments of more than 10,000 units a day during the quarter".

Datawind, maker of Aakash tablet, lead the market during quarter with 15.3 percent share leaving behind Micromax with 12.3 percent share in terms of total number of units shipped.

US tech giant Apple occupied third spot in volume terms as per the study.

"This trend points to a sort of polarisation of India tablet users one set looks primarily for performance and best-in-class build quality and typically opts for the high- end Apple iPad, while the other segment looks for a wide range of features at an affordable price point," CMR Telecoms Practice Analyst Tarun Pathak said.

India is now the world's third-largest smartphone market: Report

India has now become the third-largest smartphone market after China and the United States in terms of smartphone shipments, according to the latest report by Canalys.

The report states that in Q2 2013, the global smartphone shipments were at 238.1 million, an year-on-year growth of 50 percent, while smartphone shipments in India grew by 129 percent to hit 9 million, making it the world's third-largest smartphone market.

The Canalys report mentions that the top five smartphone vendors in India include Samsung, Micromax, Karbonn, Sony and Nokia.

Jessica Kwee, Canalys Analyst on Indian smartphone market said, "Samsung has invested heavily in its brand and channel relationships over a number of years, which has given it a big advantage over many of its international competitors. Samsung took over a third of the Indian market this quarter, followed by local vendor Micromax at 22 percent. Karbonn, Sony and Nokia made up the top five."

The report also suggests that the dynamics of the market make it challenging for international vendors, besides Samsung, to succeed.

"India is a market in transition, moving from feature phones to smart phones, and is a market that offers huge potential as hundreds of millions of users have yet to upgrade their feature phones. Domestic vendors, such as Micromax and Karbonn, are capitalizing on the popularity of their feature phones and are quicker to respond to local market demands, hence their current success," added Kwee.

The report notes that smartphone shipments in China grew 108 percent year-on-year, which is the second highest growth rate, taking the total shipments to the market to 88.1 million. This represented over a third of all worldwide shipments. Lenovo took second place in China this quarter, where it shipped 10.8 million smart phones.

The report also takes note of platform-wise growth and suggests that Android grew the fastest during the quarter, by 79 percent year-on-year. Android now powers 190 million, or 80 percent, of the smartphones shipped in Q2. While the share of Apple's iOS fell to 13 percent as the Cupertino based company is gearing up to unveil new products in the second half of 2013.

It's worth pointing out that Canalys, an independent analyst firm compiled the shipments data for vendors in around 50 countries that it tracks, so the findings might be different from actual sales data.
